Riding Guidelines

TPC promotes a culture of fun, safe, and recreational cycling. While we are not a racing club, we value organized, inclusive rides where all participants can ride cohesively and enjoyably. Members are encouraged to maintain awareness of their individual pace to ensure the group remains unified. Looking out for one another and practicing best cycling habits creates a safer, more enjoyable experience for everyone.

To protect all participants, TPC members and guests are expected to follow these policies and safety rules:

  • Ride Defensively

  • Always stay aware of your surroundings, including other cyclists, motorists, and road hazards. Use mirrors to check behind you and be vigilant, especially when turning left.

  • Be Responsible for Your Safety

  • Your actions affect everyone around you. Stay focused throughout the ride—accidents can and do happen.

  • Communicate Clearly

  • Always use hand signals and verbal cues to indicate your intentions, including slowing, stopping, passing, or turning. Call out hazards or approaching vehicles (“Car Back” or “Car Up”) to alert others.

  • Ride Predictably

  • Maintain a consistent line and avoid sudden movements. Be mindful of other riders’ positions at all times.

  • Stay Together as a Group

  • Ride cohesively, regroup at major turns or intersections, and ensure no rider is left behind after climbs or traffic stops.

  • Respect Motorists

  • Follow all traffic laws, adhere to signals, and prioritize cooperation with drivers to avoid conflict.

  • Maintain the group pace. Avoid encouraging analog riders to “chase,” as it disrupts group cohesion and can create unsafe conditions.

  • If unsafe behavior or conditions arise, address them respectfully. Every member shares responsibility for safety.

  • Represent the Club Positively

  • Kindness and courtesy reflect the club’s reputation and foster support from the community.

Additional Rules for Safe Riding

  • Helmets are mandatory. No exceptions.

  • Always have emergency contact information that is easily accessible, such as a Road ID.

  • Ensure your bike is in good condition before the ride, including properly inflated tires and working brakes.

  • Use front and rear lights and wear high-visibility clothing, especially in low-light conditions.

  • Consider wearing a mirror to enhance awareness and facilitate safe passing.

  • Aero bars are prohibited on group rides.

  • Avoid overlapping wheels and slow gradually to maintain safe spacing.

  • Communicate road hazards and call out or signal to alert other riders.

  • Follow all traffic laws, including stopping at stop signs. Always ride single file or no more than two abreast when safe to do so.

  • Transition to single file when vehicles approach from behind, with the outside rider moving behind the inside rider.

  • Pass only on the left, clearly signaling your intent. Avoid passing on the right unless absolutely necessary, and communicate loudly if doing so.

  • After intersections, wait for the group to reform before resuming pace.

  • Never leave a rider behind. Assist anyone with a mechanical issue or who has fallen back.

  • Avoid stopping on the roadway. Move off the road if you need to pause.

  • In bad weather, allow for greater distance between riders and adjust accordingly.

By adhering to these guidelines, we ensure that TPC group rides remain safe, enjoyable, and welcoming for everyone.
